As discussed in the Leo Kaylan article at the beginning of 2019 I was staying with my parents in Hawaii for 2 weeks and also trying to heal from my concussion. During that time I was listening to Spotify constantly and I was listening to as many playlists geared toward modern queer pop. Of course there was Out Now, but I also listening to Vardaan Arora's Queer Bops playlist, The Q Review's playlist and many others. I discovered lots of Queer acts who I would soon come to love such as Myylo, MNEK, & Gregory Dillon. This is also when I discovered Davy Boi.

Davy 1.jpg

I can't remember now which playlist it was but I remember it was his very first single I heard, Do What You Gotta Do. As soon as I heard that vocal hook that introduces the song where Davy sings "Oo-Oo-Oo" he had my full attention. The song sounded like a mix of 70s funk and 90s RnB topped off by Davy’s smooth but soulful vocals. I added the song to a few playlists shortly thereafter.

Then after some time had passed Davy Boi dropped the double single of Dirty Mind/What U Like and I really liked those songs too, especially What U Like. It was around this time too that I started noticing him more on Twitter especially because he responded to a lot of Michael Medrano's tweets. Michael was actually the first gay pop star to follow me on Twitter, which is how I really got into his music. I had also started talking to Michael on Twitter too so I ended up following Davy Boi and before long we started talking as well.

Davy Boi is obviously obsessed with music like I am and can talk about it at the drop of a dime like me too. Yet, because he is not only a musician but also works in promotion, Davy Boi understands how the industry really works in ways that I don't know. Davy's insights into the music industry are always very enlightening and sometimes challenge my own preconceived notions but in a good way. I'll see things in a different way after I talk with him.

As for his music Davy Boi has only released 5 songs thus far, which have all been collected on his EP which has the fitting name of Everything So Far. Nonetheless Davy Boi has already displayed an impressive range of styles within these 5 songs which touch upon Funk, Disco, RnB, Hip-Hop, Pop, Dance and even Broadway and classic Hollywood. Yet all his songs are anchored by his superb vocals, which as I said earlier are both soulful and smooth and can easily go from romantic to sexy and serious to fun.

Davy Boi is hard at work on new music which he says will drop this year. While his debut EP is great it feels like we are just getting a taste of what Davy Boi is fully capable of and I think he's only going to get better from here. In the meantime let me walk you through Davy Boi's superb debut EP in the best way I know how, by ranking all five songs. I think once you hear Davy Boi's music, you'll fall in love with it just like I have.

5. I See You

With it's memorable piano riff and hip-hop bridge, I See You reminds me a lot of mid 90s RnB. That's not a bad thing at all because it can easily be argued that my favorite decade for music was the 90s and it's definitely my favorite decade for hip-hop. The song itself deals with someone who is trying to outshine Davy Boi at his own game but Davy Boi is having none of it! Right from the start Davy Boi sings:

"I do what you do But I do it better

I say shit you so say But I am more clever

I make it look easy."

These lyrics tell you right up front that Davy Boi has no time for games and he's also the real deal. His confidence shines through here and we love a confident King, especially a Queer one!

4. Foundation

Foundation was the 5th single Davy Boi released and it represented a huge departure for him. Whereas his previous songs mixed and matched different styles and eras, it was usually in service of a club banger or a danceable bop. With Foundation Davy Boi unveiled a whole new side of himself both musically and lyrically. Musically Davy Boi is pulling from both musical theater and classic Hollywood film scoring. When juxtaposed to his previous songs the results are striking and prove that Davy Boi is just beginning to scratch the surface of what he is capable of as an artist. Lyrically the song is about remoulding yourself into a better you which is a message I can certainly get behind. My favorite lines are during the chorus when Davy Boi sings:

"Went through some bad shit

Came up like Lazarus,

I'm in a whole ass f**kin' mood

Same tracks, new compilation

Same shade, but new foundation"

When Davy Boy says 'I'm in a whole ass f**kin' mood' I felt that and you probably will too once you listen to it!

3. Dirty Mind

Dirty Mind is Davy Boi's most streamed song and it's not hard to hear why. The beat in Dirty Mind slaps and it slaps hard! Right from the start your mind is on sex before the lyrics even start and when those lyrics do arrive it's hard to argue that this isn't the sexiest song he has put out yet:

"Knock on my door, with no warnin

'Wanna hit it, 'til the mornin'

I know what you came for

Met you out late, on the weekend

Now it's Tuesday, you a freak and

You won't wait one minute more."

It's clear this relationship is based on hot sex alone but Davy Boi doesn't seem to mind and nor do I. Dirty Mind is also the only official music video for the EP and it showcases Davy Boi's on screen charisma and sex appeal. I'd like see Davy Boi in more music video in 2020 please and thank you!

2. What U Like

Do What You Gotta Do turned me on to Davy Boi but What U Like turned me into a Davy Boi Stan! The song is sexy and also unapologetically queer with some of Davy Boi’s most direct lyrics about homosexual relationships especially when he sings:

"What you want?

What's the mood?

Tell me when,

Make a move

It would be my pleasure tonight

I don't know What to say

Where you at

Come & play Daddy,

tell a boy what you like'.”

Here Davy Boi is alluding to the roles gay man sometimes take on when one of you is a lot older (Daddy) than the other. Yet, what I also love about this song is how tongue in and cheek a lot of it is too. The repeated sound clip of a man moaning in pleasure in the background is both hot and hilarious in equal measure which can be a tough thing to balance. Davy Boi is at a peak here where he comes across as sexual, charming, funny and most importantly in charge. This game Davy Boi is playing is his and you as the listener can't help but play along with him.

1. Do What You Gotta Do

As mentioned at the start of this article the vocal hook to this song (Oo-Oo-Oo) is instantly memorable and incredibly catchy. It's a simple thing but an important one because it's moments like this that end up making good pop songs great pop songs. This song runs laps through my brain all the time and my husband's too and my husband only likes Bops! Davy Boi has definitely grown as an artist since but it still sucks me in every time it comes on my Spotify. Plus it feels like the song that first gets me into a queer pop star ends up being my favorite by them 90% of the time and so it is here. So listen to it now but be ready for it to get lodged in your brain for the next several weeks afterward!
